A friend made a comment this last week that struck me hard. She told me that I need to eat foods that are good for me not just good tasting. She went on to tell me that there will be times that the food I eat is not going to be great but I need to make the choice to eat. I was shocked.
Since I was a child the food I eat was a form of relationship. I loved the food I ate, and if I did not like the taste I figured a way out of eating it. I loved boxed mac and cheese, that was my afternoon snack. I hated, yes I used that word, beets. They were and are the bane of my existence. When we went to my grandparents house my grandma would always make them. YUCK! And of course I had to eat them. YUCK! I tried to sneak out of it, but it never worked. Growing up I basically ate what I enjoyed both good food and bad.
As adult I am finding that not all food that I liked/loved is good for my body. I am learning that there are certain foods that are better for me even though I don't like the taste. A good example is coconut. Anyone who knows me knows I don't like coconut. Coconut flour, oil, chips, flakes whatever coconut you give me I turn up my nose. But the truth is coconut oil is a good ant-inflammatory. Cooking with it can help with inflammation in your body. Coconut flour, which is gluten free, is a great flour to use as a batter on the outside of food for frying. So, at 40+ years old I am learning to eat coconut "stuff".
I am learning in this journey that food is not my friend. I am learning that food is a fuel to help my body run the way it is suppose to run. There are foods that taste great and are great for my body. But there will be times when I have to eat certain foods that don't taste so great but are amazing for my body. The food does not have to be my friend.
I have friends, actual people who are in my life. I need to, no want to, learn that sharing time with my family, friends, the people in my life is far better then snuggling up to a carton of ice cream. Going to coffee with a girlfriend is more entertaining then chopping on a bag of chips while watching some show.
Do I enjoy eating? By all means yes. But I am finding I am enjoying the discover of food more then the eating of food. That friends are for more entertaining then food. And lastly I am finding combining the two can be an amazing benefit to this journey.
